Clips from The Jeffersons - Mother Jefferson's Birthday (S02E02)
"while you were walking on my back."
The Jeffersons
"Uh, this may sound like a silly question,"
The Jeffersons
"but what is a threepenny bit?"
The Jeffersons
"Oh, it's a small British coin"
The Jeffersons
"worth three pennies."
The Jeffersons
"Actually,"
The Jeffersons
"it was worth three pennies some years ago,"
The Jeffersons
"only there's no such thing as a threepenny bit in England"
The Jeffersons
"anymore,"
The Jeffersons
"not since they went to the decimal system."
The Jeffersons
"In fact, threepence"
The Jeffersons
"would be more like sixpence today."
The Jeffersons
"Bentley..."
The Jeffersons
"Only they don't have sixpences anymore either."
The Jeffersons
"Bentley, here's a nickel. You can keep the change."
The Jeffersons
"You don't understand, Mr. J."
The Jeffersons
"It's my lucky threepenny bit."
The Jeffersons
"It couldn't have been that lucky or it wouldn't have got lost."
The Jeffersons
"But it is."
The Jeffersons
"It's been with me since the Christmas of '55."
The Jeffersons
"Would you like to hear about it?"
The Jeffersons
"No."
The Jeffersons
"I'd gone into the woods outside Hertfordshire"
The Jeffersons
"in search of a Christmas tree,"
The Jeffersons
"and I was chopping down this rather nice Scottish pine"
The Jeffersons
"when a sudden gust of wind came up"
The Jeffersons
"and blew the tree over in an unexpected direction,"
The Jeffersons
"completely crushing the bonnet of my Riley."
The Jeffersons
"That's terrible. Who's Riley?"
The Jeffersons
"It's an old automobile."
The Jeffersons
"But another foot to the left"
The Jeffersons
"and the tree would have landed squarely on Susan."
The Jeffersons
"Good thing you didn't have an unlucky coin."
The Jeffersons
"Let me help you find it so you can get out of here."
The Jeffersons
"But I haven't told you the really lucky part yet."
The Jeffersons
"See, I had to trudge seven miles through the snow"
The Jeffersons
"to the nearest telephone,"
The Jeffersons
"and when I got there,"
The Jeffersons
"I found that the only coin in my possession"
The Jeffersons
"was the threepenny bit,"
The Jeffersons
"which, of course, wouldn't work in the telephone."
The Jeffersons
"Well, wait a minute."
The Jeffersons
"The tree ruined your car, you girl almost got killed,"
The Jeffersons
"and your coin wouldn't work in the phone."
The Jeffersons
"What's so lucky about that?"
The Jeffersons
"Susan and I had to spend the night together"
The Jeffersons
"in the back seat of the Riley,"
The Jeffersons
"and if you knew Susan like I got to know Susan..."
The Jeffersons
"Is that it?"
The Jeffersons
"By George, you've done it, Mr. J."
The Jeffersons
"What a relief."
The Jeffersons
"Are you all right?"
The Jeffersons
"Perfectly all right,"
The Jeffersons
"thanks to my lucky coin, of course."
The Jeffersons
"Well, I'll... Oh, I almost forgot."
The Jeffersons
"That special little thing going all right, Mrs. Jefferson?"
The Jeffersons
"I don't know what you're talking about."
The Jeffersons
"Ah, mum's the word, eh, Mum?"
The Jeffersons
"Well, goodbye."
The Jeffersons
"There, you see? You see?"
The Jeffersons
"If I didn't have my lucky coin with me,"
The Jeffersons
"that could have been quite nasty."
The Jeffersons
"Hm, that weirdo's getting weirder."
The Jeffersons
"Oh, my, that takes me back."
The Jeffersons
"I remember bumping into a door when I was a small girl."
The Jeffersons
"I had a lump out to here."
The Jeffersons
"I was chasing after Emma"
The Jeffersons
"because she'd taken my favorite doll."
The Jeffersons
"Who's Emma?"
The Jeffersons
"Mama's sister."
The Jeffersons
"How come I've never heard of her before?"
The Jeffersons
"Because her and Mama"
The Jeffersons
"haven't spoken to each other for years."
The Jeffersons
"That was Emma's fault, not mine."
The Jeffersons
"They had this big fight over nothing."
The Jeffersons
"It was not over nothing. Emma cheated me."
The Jeffersons
"When did she do that?"
The Jeffersons
The Jeffersons
"You haven't spoken for 25 years?"
The Jeffersons
"Not since Friday, February the 9th, 1951."
The Jeffersons
"How can you remember it was a Friday?"
The Jeffersons
"That's bingo night at the church."
The Jeffersons
"And that's what the fight was all about."
The Jeffersons
"We used to go to bingo together,"
The Jeffersons
"and this particular night,"
The Jeffersons
"the first prize was an electric blanket,"
The Jeffersons
"and I wanted that blanket, Louise."
The Jeffersons
"Go on. What happened?"
The Jeffersons
"Well, I had to go to the bathroom,"
The Jeffersons
"so I asked Emma to play my bingo card"
The Jeffersons
"while I was gone,"
The Jeffersons
"and when I came back, Emma had won the blanket."
The Jeffersons
"Well, you came close."
The Jeffersons
"I came closer than that."
The Jeffersons
"She won the prize with my card."
The Jeffersons
"Now, Mama, it could have been Emma's card."
The Jeffersons
"The card was mine."
The Jeffersons
"Because my card had a nine in the top corner."
The Jeffersons
"And Emma kept the blanket?"
The Jeffersons
"Yep, and Mama said she'd never speak to her again"
The Jeffersons
"unless she admitted that she won with Mama's card,"
The Jeffersons
"and Emma said she'd never speak to Mama again"
The Jeffersons
"until she apologized for calling her a cheat."
The Jeffersons
"But doesn't it seem silly"
The Jeffersons
"to keep a fight going all these years"
The Jeffersons
"just over a bingo card?"
The Jeffersons
"The nine was mine!"
The Jeffersons
"Okay, okay."
The Jeffersons
"Emma never used to be like that when we were young,"
The Jeffersons
"even though she was a tattletale."
The Jeffersons
"She was such a lot of fun to be with."
The Jeffersons
"It seems such a shame to be wasting all this time"
The Jeffersons
"when you two could be together."
The Jeffersons
"Yeah, I really loved her."
The Jeffersons
"I wish she'd come to her senses and admit she was wrong."
The Jeffersons
"Well, would you like a cup of coffee?"
The Jeffersons
"Oh, all right."
The Jeffersons
"I expect we're having the champagne"
The Jeffersons
"later on?"
The Jeffersons
"What champagne?"
The Jeffersons
